About TIMSS 2023
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an assessment of mathematics and science that has been monitoring trends in student achievement in Grades 4 and 8 since 1995. TIMSS takes place every 4 years in over 60 countries and provides internationally comparative data on students’ attainment in mathematics and science, and how their performance is related to their attitudes, gender and background. The ETARC of the Faculty of Education (FED) has been designated as the implementing body for Macao by DSEDJ. ETARC will collaborate with schools to oversee the administration, processing, and scoring of the TIMSS 2023 assessment. Additionally, ETARC will be accountable for reporting and disseminating the findings of TIMSS 2023 in Macao, following the guidelines and supervision of DSEDJ.
What’s New for TIMSS 2023?
A digital TIMSS reflects the growing use of digital devices in school and everyday life and leverages technology to assess a new generation of students. TIMSS 2023 completes TIMSS transition to eAssessment, which began with TIMSS 2019. TIMSS 2023 includes a wide variety of interactive item types and features that capitalize on the digital environment and engage students. For example, students will create a range of data displays, move and rotate objects on the screen to solve problems, and show their work with typed text, equations, and free-hand drawings. In addition to colorful graphics, item stimuli can include videos or animations to show science investigations or phenomena. In Macao, around 6,100 grade 4 students have participated in TIMSS 2023 digital assessment.
