About PIRLS 2026

The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is a large-scale study which aims to monitor and compare the reading comprehension achievement of Grade 4 students across participating countries/regions. It provides information to track how different aspects of reading performance have changed over time. Additionally, PIRLS collects background information which allows the participating countries/regions to examine how students’ learning gains are associated with home, school, and classroom contexts. The ETARC of the Faculty of Education (FED) has been designated as the implementing body for Macao by DSEDJ. ETARC will collaborate with schools to oversee the administration, processing, and scoring of the PIRLS 2026 assessment. Additionally, ETARC will be accountable for reporting and disseminating the findings of PIRLS 2026 in Macao, following the guidelines and supervision of DSEDJ.

What’s New for PIRLS 2026?

To facilitate important advances in assessing reading comprehension at the fourth grade, all countries in PIRLS 2026 will participate digitally. The digital assessment system will facilitate the translation process and bring greater uniformity and quality control to data collection methods and procedures.
