PISA 2025
Conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is the largest international comparative education programme in the world. Since PISA began in 2000, more than 100 countries and economies have participated in the programme.
Through participation in PISA, countries and economies become part of a global community. PISA is also one of the primary sources of data for the United Nations and its member states in monitoring progress towards the achievement of the Education Sustainable Development Goal by 2030.
The Macao-PISA Center, affiliated with the Educational Testing and Assessment Research Centre, is implementing the PISA 2025 survey as part of its ongoing mission to assess the competencies of 15-year-old students. In alignment with previous assessment cycles, this survey evaluates proficiency in science, reading, and mathematics, with a particular emphasis on scientific literacy, which has been a focal point since the 2006 and 2015 assessments. Notably, this cycle introduces a new domain: Learning in the Digital World. The survey will encompass a representative sample of 15-year-old students in Macao. In addition to assessing their competencies, the study will gather data through questionnaires administered to students, parents, teachers, and school principals. These questionnaires will investigate various factors, including students’ learning environments, motivational orientations, attitudes, and their social and immigration backgrounds.
The results of PISA 2025 will be published in 2026. Currently, Mr. Chi Meng KONG, the Director of DSEDJ is the PISA Governing Board Member (PGB) of Macao-PISA 2025, while Prof. Kwok Cheung CHEUNG is the National Project Manager (NPM).

Why is PISA important and what are the benefits of participating?
Every school and student participating in PISA plays a crucial role in representing Macao. It is important that the selected schools contribute to this significant assessment of educational trends. Their participation ensures that the sample from Macao accurately reflects the knowledge and skills of all students within our education system.
Depending on the sample size and response rates, participating schools will receive a report highlighting how their average scores compare to those of other educational systems included in the study.
PISA offers a unique opportunity for Macao to evaluate how well students approaching the end of their compulsory education are prepared for either the workforce or further studies, in comparison to their peers from over 90 countries participating in PISA 2025.
By engaging in PISA, schools and students play a vital part in the continuous effort to improve education in our society. PISA helps identify both the strengths and the room for improvement of Macao students in math, reading, science, LDW and digital literacy, while also providing valuable insights into successful policies and practices from around the world.
Why is PISA important and what are the benefits of participating?
Since 2000, PISA has involved more than
countries and economies and around
students worldwide
The test is digital. It does not assess memorization nor reproduction of what is learned at school. It does assess student’s ability to apply and relate knowledge and skills in everyday contexts. In each cycle an innovative area of learning is also assessed. In PISA 2025 this is “Learning in the Digital World (LDW)”.
