About PISA 2025

Conducted in over 80 countries/economies, PISA is the world’s largest international study which compares education systems worldwide.  PISA ‎assesses students’ performance in ‘real-life’ tasks that are considered relevant for effective ‎participation in adult society and for life-long learning. PISA 2025 is the nineth cycle of  this OECD international assessment. Three key literacies are assessed (reading, mathematics and science), with a focus on one of these areas in each cycle. Science is the focus and Learning in the digital world is the innovative domain in PISA 2025.

What’s New for PISA 2025?

Multi-Stage Adaptive Testing

Almost all participating countries/economies, including Macao-China, have administered PISA 2025 tests on computer assessment platforms. A multi-stage adaptive test design is subsequently extended for the PISA 2025 assessment of the three core literacies.

Adaptive testing is executed on a computer-based platform and can improve accuracy in measuring student performance. Using a multi-stage approach, the test is adaptive to each student’s ability level – i.e., students start from a standard set of items and then progress to answer items of a lower or higher difficulty according to their performance in answering items in the earlier stages.

Learning in the digital world

The PISA 2025 Learning in the Digital World assessment measures students’ capacity to engage in an iterative process of knowledge building and problem solving using computational tools. This capacity is demonstrated by effective self-regulated learning while applying computational and scientific inquiry practices. For the first time, PISA provides international comparisons of students self-regulated learning processes, including measures of motivation and emotion regulation. This evidence is built by combining response and process data through innovative analytical models.
